Nastja Säde Rönkkö is an artist working with video, performance, installation and text. Her projects investigate the relationship between the digital era, power, humanity and the future of our planet. She is particularly fascinated with how concepts such as love, slowness or affection can be silent yet radical ways to be and act in the world. Her practice dreams about the future and explores presence through politics and poetics of emotion.

This mini-documentary by Sami Sänpäkkilä is part of the series A Day in the Mouth that follows artists, musicians and politicians as they pursue their passions and practice their professions.

Tommi Liimatta – A Day in the Mouth episode 12

Tommi Liimatta is a comic book artist, a writer and a musician. He has many bands including Absoluuttinen Nollapiste, Herttomiehet and a solo project that he releases an album with once in a decade. Tommi has just released a new book in his biographical series. Continuing his childhood saga from Jeppis part 1 and 2 this third book is titled Rollo and recounts his life in Rovaniemi in the early 90’s. In this episode of A Day in the Mouth we visit Tommi at his home take a look at his bookshelf and find out what he’s been up to lately.

Ninni Luhtasaari short documentary

Ninni Luhtasaari is a primitive entertainer in music and visual arts. Her lumpy ceramic fountain sculptures and hand embroidered textile fantasies portray themselves as confused and out of control. Her works have been featured in multiple group, joint and private exhibitions around Finland.

For almost 15 years Ninni has been touring and making music with her band Pintandwefall. The spontaneous hold on ideas, fearless grasp on instruments, doubtless view on life and a stage presence to match have taken this masked quartet through both Finnish and European music scenes. Ninni also plays in a multitude of other bands such as Ninni Forever Band, Maria ja Marsialaiset, Risto and Jari Raaste.

Pentti Järvelin is a skater, a Youtuber, a comic book artist and much more. After living in Helsinki for 11 years he moved to Oulu. I visited him to see how he finds it and we talked about many things related and unrelated to skating. Pentti made Hai Jump, one of the best skateboard magazines in Finland and is active in the skateboarding community everywhere.

Olin myös todella yllättänyt, että en ole koskaan saanut mistään edes lähellekkään oikeaa kuvaa siitä kuinka tauotonta ihmisten kanssa keskustelua, somen päivittämistä ja valtavan asiamäärän hallintaa työ vaatii. Mediaesiintymiset ja television kyselytunnit ovat siitä vain pieni osa. Tämäkin minidokkari on vain pintaraapaisu työnkuvasta. Kuvattu Turussa ja Helsingissä 8. ja 9.5.2017.

The eight episode in A Day in the Mouth series is about Emma Ainala who is my favourite Finnish painter at the moment. I travelled to Savonlinna to film her painting at her studio and also visited her family. Her husband Lauri Ainala who makes music as himself and in Paavoharju has been a friend of mine for years now. Although I’ve known about Emma for quite some time (and she’s done artwork for Paavoharju as well) I’ve only met her in passing a few times. This is the first episode that I’ve done about a person that is not a close friend of mine. I think you can see some of that shine through the documentary. I don’t necessarily think for the bad though. :)

The intereviews were shot with Sony FS700 and the paintings from Helsinki Contemporary were shot with Sony FS700 with Odyssey 7Q+. I used Premiere Pro for editing. English subtitles were added with Vimeo subtitler (It’s a bit buggy but I managed).

Emma Ainala is represented by Helsinki Contemporary and I want to thank them for letting me crash their gallery and film Emma’s paintings. Thanks to Arsi Keva for assistance at HKI Contemporary and Eeva Tuomi for mental help with the piece! Huge thanks to Lauri, Kerttu, Leppä and Emma!

The seventh episode in the series A Day in the Mouth features Lau Nau, the musical alias of Laura Naukkarinen – a singer-songwriter, composer, producer.

This episode took a while to put together as I first felt that I had not done justice to Laura’s amazing kindhearted person and her massive enthusiasm for music well enough while filming Laura and her family. It took an editor other than me to find that from the footage. This is the first time anyone edits my videos and I’m very excited that Eeva Tuomi was able to bring out what I was perhaps too close to able to see. Laura and myself have known each other for a long time and she is among one of my oldest “musical” friends. Especially in this case it was nice to see someone else juggle the questions of what to include and what to leave out.

This episode was filmed on two different cameras. A Sony FS700 was used on the sit down interviews and some of the outdoor low light shots. A Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera was used on all the handheld footage. It’s amazing how well the pocket camera grades. It’s much better then the FS700 with it’s low bit rate internal AVCHD codec. I was able to correct all the BMPCC shots exactly as I wished. You can see the quality difference clearly if you look at the sit down interview parts, the grade starts to fall apart.

Eeva edited on Premiere Pro and I did all the post work on Premiere as well. After transferring to Mac and Adobe Creative Cloud my editing and work has become a lot quicker and easier. There are some annoyances in the Adobe world and things I miss from Sony Vegas Pro but overall I can’t recommend it enough. If you have to provide files to anyone in the media industry it’s so much easier to work with Prores files.

Goodiepal or Gæoudjiparl van den Dobbelsteen, whose real name is Parl Kristian Bjørn Vester, is a controversial Danish/Faroese musician/composer. The eccentric and self-made Goodiepal has influenced the course of modern music through radical excursions into computer technology and media art. Until recently Goodiepal has been employed as a teacher at DIEM (Danish Institute for Electro-acoustic Music) at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark.

Goodiepal declared intellectual war against the stupidity in modern computer music and media art, which is to say against The Royal Academy of Music, when he quit the job in 2008. As per 2012 he lives somewhere in Europe and is married to the road.

Jan Anderzén is a visual artist, a musician and he runs a record label Vauva. His solo outift is called Tomutonttu and he is the leader of an avant-garde sound group Kemialliset Ystävät. Tomutonttu and Kemialliset Ystävät discographies are vast and include CDs, vinyl records, cassettes and lathe cuts released on Fonal, Fusetron, Beta-Lactam Ring, Lal Lal Lal, Jewelled Antler, Celebrate Psi Phenomenom and other underground labels around the world. Jan’s music utilizes a wide spectrum of instruments and electronics to create their joyful blasts but the recording studio in itself might be their single most important instrument. Jan has collaborated with hundreds of people through his art. Recently Jan held workshops and played a series of concerts for school kids at the planetarium of his home town Tampere.
