Well yeah, the kids are portraited pretty lifeless but I think it might be accurate when you consider how suffocated and controlled the whole community in the movie is. If you are beaten violently everytime you act like a child... There's one scene where the kids act more like kids - when they're left alone in the classroom. Amazing movie indeed.
